Camposto Lake

Description

Camposto Lake is the biggest lake in Abruzzo. It was created blocking the Fucino River with two dams and flooding the area located between the Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga. It was created in the 1930s and 1940s.

The lake is found at an altitude of 1,313 meters above sea level, it has a surface of about 1,400 hectares, and it is 30/35 meters deep. The lake, part of the national park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga, occupies a big part of the Campotosto’s territory, but it stretches to reach also Capitignano and L’Aquila.

This artificial basin is visited every year by thousands of sport enthusiasts for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and kayaking. Around the lake, you will find many cyclists and hikers.
